When you donate your car to Twin City Wheels, you’re making a local gift that starts right at your curb in Minneapolis and reaches neighbors across the Twin Cities. We arrange free, at-your-door pickup anywhere in the city and surrounding communities, and the proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s mission serving people who are blind or visually impaired. That means your car in Longfellow, North Loop, Nokomis, or Near North can help fund vital services for Minnesotans who need them most.
Here’s how it works: once you schedule, we send a local tow partner directly to you—whether you’re in South Minneapolis by Powderhorn Park, in Uptown near Bde Maka Ska, in Northeast Arts District, or in suburbs like St. Louis Park, Richfield, Bloomington, Edina, Brooklyn Park, or Maple Grove. We also reach outlying communities throughout the greater Twin Cities region when routing allows. Pickups are always free, usually within a few days, and we handle the heavy lifting so you don’t have to manage towing or paperwork alone. You get a tax-deductible receipt, and your donation stays rooted in Minnesota, supporting services that benefit people in our own communities.
How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us about your vehicle and where it’s parked
Start online or by phone and share a few quick details: your Minneapolis or Twin Cities address, whether the car runs, and where it’s located (alley, driveway, street parking, ramp). This helps us match you with the right local tow operator and plan for city streets, tight alleys, or suburban driveways so pickup goes smoothly from the start.
2. Choose a convenient pickup day and time window
We’ll offer available pickup windows based on your location—whether you’re in dense areas like Downtown Minneapolis or quieter spots like Golden Valley or Eagan. You select what works best for your schedule. In many cases we can arrange pickup within a few days; more remote or rural addresses outside the core metro may take a bit longer so we can route efficiently.
3. Prepare keys, title, and access for the tow truck
Before your pickup window, locate your Minnesota title if you have it, remove personal items, and make sure the tow truck can reach your vehicle. In Minneapolis, this might mean moving recycling bins, clearing alley access, or providing a garage code. In suburbs or outlying areas, confirm there’s space for a flatbed to safely load your vehicle without blocking traffic.
4. Meet the driver or arrange a no-contact handoff
On pickup day, a local tow operator will arrive at your Minneapolis or Twin Cities address. You can meet them to sign paperwork and hand over the keys and title, or, in many situations, arrange a no-contact handoff if discussed in advance. The driver will handle loading, towing, and basic paperwork so your donation is simple and stress-free.
5. Receive your tax receipt and know your impact is local
After your vehicle is sold, you’ll receive a tax-deductible receipt. For most cars this will typically support a deduction of at least $500; for amounts over $500, the IRS requires Form 1098-C. Your donation’s proceeds help fund Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired, supporting community members across Minneapolis and the greater Twin Cities.
Local pickup gotchas
Tight alleys and downtown access in Minneapolis
Tip: Many Minneapolis homes use alley parking, and downtown streets can be narrow or busy. Let us know if your car is in an alley, underground ramp, or tight spot so we can send the right truck and plan the approach. Clearing snow, trash bins, or other vehicles can prevent delays and last-minute rescheduling for your pickup.
Permit parking, HOA rules, and gated communities
Tip: Neighborhoods with permit-only parking, condo ramps, or HOA rules (common in areas like Uptown, North Loop, or suburban townhomes) can slow things down. Share any gate codes, building policies, or parking rules when you schedule. If your HOA or building needs notice for towing, we’ll work with you to choose a window that meets their requirements.
Rural or outlying Minnesota addresses
Tip: If you’re outside the immediate metro—perhaps near Elk River, Farmington, or further into Greater Minnesota—pickup is still free, but routing can take longer. Our tow partners group rural pickups to keep things efficient. Be flexible with dates and provide clear directions or landmarks so your driver finds you quickly, especially in winter or on unmarked roads.
Missing title or old Minnesota plates
Tip: You can often still donate without a title, but the process may require extra steps. Let us know upfront if your Minnesota title is lost or if the car hasn’t been registered in years. We’ll explain what’s usually needed and remind you to remove your plates and cancel insurance after pickup, in line with Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services guidance.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If at-home pickup isn’t ideal for your situation—maybe your car is stuck in a tight parking ramp off Hennepin Avenue, stored at a mechanic in Roseville, or sitting disabled at a relative’s cabin—Twin City Wheels can often coordinate with wherever the vehicle is located. In some cases, you may choose to drive the car to an easier pickup spot, such as a friend’s driveway in a wider street area or a workplace lot in Bloomington or Edina. We’ll talk through your specific Minneapolis or Minnesota location and find the simplest way to complete your donation while keeping it free and convenient for you.
Minneapolis pickup coverage
Twin City Wheels serves donors across Minneapolis and the broader Twin Cities—South Minneapolis, Northeast, Phillips, Downtown, North Minneapolis, and neighborhoods around the lakes, plus suburbs like St. Paul, Minnetonka, Eden Prairie, Burnsville, Coon Rapids, and beyond. Core metro pickups can often be scheduled sooner, while more distant Minnesota locations may add a bit of routing time. For most donations, you’ll sign your Minnesota title over to the charity or its authorized agent; after pickup, remove your plates and follow Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services guidance to cancel registration and insurance. Your local donation helps support Heritage for the Blind’s services to people who are blind or visually impaired in communities like yours.
