Yes, you can donate a damaged car in Minneapolis today

In the Twin Cities with a dented, rusty, accident‑damaged, or cracked‑windshield car? You can still donate it. No repairs, no hassle, free towing, and a full tax receipt.

If you’re in Minneapolis or St. Paul staring at a car with dents, rust, a cracked windshield, hail or accident damage and wondering, “Can I really donate this?” the answer with Twin City Wheels is yes. Cosmetic and body damage do not disqualify your vehicle. Heritage for the Blind, the 501(c)(3) we support, accepts cars in virtually any cosmetic condition. Whether your car is parked in Uptown, Frogtown, Brooklyn Park, or Eagan—and even if it doesn’t run—we can still arrange a free pickup and donation.

Here’s how it works in Minnesota: you don’t need to fix the dents, repair the rust, or replace the glass. We’ll schedule a free tow anywhere in the Twin Cities metro, including suburbs like Bloomington, Maple Grove, and Woodbury. Your vehicle is then sold as‑is at auction or for parts. Your tax deduction is based on the actual sale price, not how pretty the car looks. If it sells for more than $500, you can deduct that sale amount; otherwise, you’re still guaranteed a receipt for up to $500. Proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired. Simple, honest, and no out‑of‑pocket cost to you.

How to get your free pickup scheduled

1

1. Tell us about your damaged vehicle

Start online or by phone with a quick description of your car and its damage—dents, rust, cracked glass, storm or accident damage. Whether it’s in Northeast, Powderhorn, or out in Edina, just share the basics plus your title status and location so we can confirm it’s eligible and plan the easiest pickup.

2

2. Schedule a free Twin Cities pickup

We arrange free towing anywhere in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area and surrounding suburbs. Your car can be in your driveway in Richfield, a lot in Downtown Minneapolis, or on the street in St. Paul. Running or not, body damage or broken windows, the tow company will pick it up at no cost to you.

3

3. Hand over keys and title at pickup

On pickup day, you (or your designee) meet the tow driver, sign the title, and hand over the keys if you have them. The driver will walk you through any necessary signatures. Even if the vehicle has broken glass, hanging bumpers, or severe rust, it’s taken as‑is. You’ll get a pickup receipt for your records.

4

4. We sell your car as‑is for maximum value

Twin City Wheels works with buyers who understand damaged vehicles—salvage, parts, and auction buyers. Your car is sold as‑is, without you spending a dollar on repairs. The actual sale proceeds, not the car’s appearance, determine the value reported to you and to the IRS for your potential tax deduction.

5

5. Receive your tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind

After the sale, Heritage for the Blind mails you a tax receipt. If the car sells for more than $500, the receipt reflects the gross sale price; if it sells for less, you’re still able to claim up to $500. For donations over $500, you’ll also receive IRS Form 1098‑C for your records and tax filing.

Potential complications to watch for

Missing or incorrect title, even for a damaged car

Tip: Body damage is fine, but title issues can slow things down. If the name on the title doesn’t match your ID, there are liens, or the title is missing, let us know upfront. We can often guide you through Minnesota replacement or correction steps so your pickup and tax receipt aren’t delayed.

Severely unsafe locations for pickup

Tip: A car with smashed glass or loose parts in a tight alley, ramp, or underground garage can complicate towing. Tell us exactly where the vehicle sits—such as a downtown ramp or alley in Dinkytown—so we can send the right truck and avoid last‑minute rescheduling or extra onsite maneuvering.

Personal items left in a totaled or storm‑damaged car

Tip: It’s easy to forget belongings when a car’s been wrecked or flooded. Before the tow truck arrives, remove plates, garage openers, registration, and personal items. Once the vehicle heads to auction or a salvage buyer, getting items back becomes difficult, especially if glass is shattered or doors don’t open well.

Unclear damage history after an accident claim

Tip: If the car was in a serious accident or declared a total loss, have any insurance paperwork handy. We don’t need perfect records, but knowing whether the vehicle has a salvage or rebuilt title in Minnesota helps us route it correctly and keeps the donation process smooth and transparent for your deduction.

FAQ

Can I donate a car with major body damage or a salvage title?
Yes. Significant body damage—crumpled fenders, crushed doors, hail dents, or a salvage/rebuilt title—does not disqualify your car from donation. Twin City Wheels can arrange free pickup across the Twin Cities, and Heritage for the Blind will accept the vehicle as‑is. Your deduction is based on what it actually sells for, not book value.
Do I need to fix dents, rust, or a cracked windshield first?
No repairs are needed. You don’t have to touch the rust, straighten dents, or replace cracked glass. In fact, spending money on cosmetic fixes rarely increases the sale enough to be worth it. We’ll take the car as‑is in Minneapolis, St. Paul, or the suburbs and send you a tax receipt after it’s sold.
What if the car doesn’t run because of an accident or storm?
That’s fine. We accept non‑running vehicles, even if they’ve been in a collision, flood, or heavy hailstorm. As long as the car can be safely accessed by a tow truck, we’ll arrange free towing from your location in the Twin Cities. The vehicle is sold as‑is for parts or repair, and your deduction is based on that sale.
How does body damage affect my tax deduction amount?
Body damage may lower the sale price, which can lower your potential deduction, but it doesn’t prevent you from donating. If the car sells for more than $500, you can generally deduct the sale amount. If it sells for less than $500, you may still deduct up to $500, subject to IRS rules and your tax situation.
Can you pick up a damaged car from my apartment or parking ramp?
Usually yes. We regularly pick up from street parking in Minneapolis, apartment lots in places like St. Louis Park or Roseville, and some ramps. Let us know if there are tight turns, low ceilings, or security gates. We’ll coordinate with the towing company to make sure the right truck comes and access is arranged.
What paperwork do I need to donate a damaged car in Minnesota?
In most cases you’ll need your Minnesota vehicle title, signed over to complete the donation. If there’s a lien listed that’s been paid off, you may need a lien release. Registration is helpful but not required. If your title is lost, tell us; we’ll explain how to obtain a replacement from the state before pickup.
How long does it take from scheduling to pickup and receipt?
In the Twin Cities, pickup is often scheduled within a few days, depending on your location and tow availability. The actual tow is usually quick, even with a damaged vehicle. After the car sells, Heritage for the Blind mails your tax receipt. The timing can vary, but many donors receive it within several weeks.
